30 days in

Well it’s day 30 of my Conscious Clothing commitment. If you didn’t catch my previous posts, I committed to only purchase second hand clothing for the rest of the year. In addition I cleaned out my closet and reorganized everything.

So far it has been going great. As the weather has started changing I am beginning to see where I may have a few gaps in my wardrobe and also noticing the items that really don’t seem to spark joy anymore. It is helping me really begin to understand what I really need when it comes to a wardrobe.

I travel a good bit for work and am often on stage speaking and therefore photographed. This means I need to have a good amount of comfortable, fashionable and professional outfits. I decided as part of this experiment that I would try a rental clothing program. I chose to try Infinitely Loft. This happens to be one of the least expensive at $65 a month and also a brand I like that fits me well.

Essentially you sign up, choose your favorite items to build a closet and then specify your favorites. From there they send you three items at a time. When you’re done wearing them you mark them returned and send them back with the bag they provide. No need to clean the clothes as they dry clean everything. If you end up wanting to buy an item you can do that at a discount.

So far I have received nine items in which I never wore one item due to fit and ended up buying two items that really enhanced my wardrobe. I’m enjoying the program and will continue the experiment for now. I plan to evaluate if I really need the program or if I feel I have what I need already.

If you’re interested in trying clothing rentals there are many options like Rent the Runway, Ann Taylor, Loft, etc.

Conscious Clothing

I recently read the book by Elizabeth Cline, “The Conscious Closet” and found myself completely inspired. I have always had a passion for fashion. In fact, my undergraduate degree is in Fashion Merchandising/Marketing. I have always combined my interest in fashion with my commitment to the environment by buying second hand clothes here and there. I love going to thrift stores and sifting through the items to find the true gems.

I knew that the fashion industry had serious environmental and social concerns but this book really opened my eyes to the hidden truth. Here are a few important facts I feel compelled to share:

The apparel industry employs hundreds of millions of people and is a 2.5 trillion dollar business. Elizabeth Cline shared that, “as much as 8% of carbon emissions are caused by fashion. A third of the micro plastic pollution junking up our oceans is coming from what we wear. A garbage truck’s worth of unwanted fashion is landfilled in the United States every two minutes.” She also shares that the majority of those working in fashion are not making a living wage.

Her book inspired me to make more of a commiment to building a consious wardrobe. As a result I have cleaned out my closet and dresser and folded all my clothes following Marie Kondo’s instructions in her books. More on that in another blog in the future. I then donated a few bags of items to my local Goodwill and sent off some to Thred Up for them to sell on my behalf. Next I decided to make the commitment to only buy second hand clothes for the rest of the year. As I stick to this commitment I will plan to share my journey here on this blog and on my instagram feed for @verde.chic

I hope you will follow up journey and even consider joining me to start creating your own Conscious Wardrobe.
